Bakkies Botha has been found not guilty of foul play at a hearing on Monday evening, but JP Nel’s tournament is over.
Botha was cited for an open handed push into the face of Sharks No 8 Ryan Kankowski, but the incident was not deemed serious enough to warrant a suspension.
Nel, however, will miss the the match and a potential final after being found guilty of a stiff-arm tackle on Stefan Terblanche which earned him a four week suspension.
With Wynand Oliver highly unlikely to be fit to play in the match after sustaining a hip injury against the Sharks, Nel’s suspension now creates a selection headache in midfield for coach Frans Ludeke.
He is likely to call on the experienced Wayne Julies to fill the inside centre berth, while Jaco Pretorius will start at outside centre. Julies played a central role in the Bulls’ championship-winning run in 2007, but hasn’t played regularly at Super Rugby level since.
Ludeke will select either Marius Delport or Stephan Dippenaar as midfield cover.
