Heyneke Meyer is set to become the Southern Spears director of rugby.
Keo.co.za has it on good authority that SA Rugby has offered the post to Meyer, who is currently employed as head coach of the Leicester Tigers.
Meyer recently flew back to South Africa to be with his wife, who has cancer, and her parents, who are very ill. While he was only supposed to be away for two weeks on compassionate leave, the Tigers have admitted he may not return to England. Meyer is only in his first season of a three-year deal with the club.
If Meyer does relocate to Port Elizabeth, it would be a massive boost to the Spears, who are set to take part in an expanded Super Rugby tournament from 2011. He would undoubtably encourage several Bulls players to join him at the Spears, which would help to make the franchise competitive.
While some have speculated that Meyer could return to the Bulls, this is unlikely as he had a major fallout with his then employers after leading the franchise to Super 14 glory in 2007.
