The Rhodesian Light Infantry Regimental Association
UK Branch News Flash
MAY 2008
Well , we are well and truly into the second part of the year and summer is finally beginning to arrive in the UK.
Our membership has continued to grow and we now have over 240members and I would like to welcome all the new members aboard and to their first news letter, however interest from the USA has grown and I have added them all to our mailing list, which takes us over the 250 mark, which is absolutely fabulous considering the short time we have been formed.
I would like to start the news letter by taking you back to our AGM in Feb, many issues were spoken about , but the idea of a summer BBQ was raised and I have to thank Gerry Doyle and Mike Addison who have pulled out all the stops and have got it organised please see the attachment for all the details, it will be a great weekend and I hope to see as many people as possible there, bring your family and friends everybody is welcome.
We still have got a lot of Merchandise left to sell and if you have not got your Ties £14.95, blazer badges £23.50, combat infantry badges £9.00, Para wings £3.80 and I still have a few RGSM completely mounted £50.00, if you require any of these items please send your cheques to the address at the end of this letter, all these items will be on sale in September.
The membership cards are now available if you want yours please send a stamped addressed envelope and I will send it out by return post, at this point I am also going to enclose some raffle tickets for September. Please try and sell as many as possible once sold please send the stubs and the money back to myself for placing in the raffle drum 1st Prize will be a painting of a LEOPARD by Craig Bone, which I am sure you will all agree is a fantastic prize, the cost of the tickets will be £1.00 each and they are going on sale world wide to the other branches.
The next issue I would like to talk about is the rededication service in September, should I be worried we have only sold 22 tickets out of an availability 220 to RLI members, the demand from outside the RLI is far greater and I could sell the tickets 3 times over and I cannot hold off for much longer, if you want to “BOOK KNOW”I suggest you do the following.
Go on to the RLI website www.therli.com click on the statue in the bottom right hand corner and this will bring up a menu on the left hand side of the page.
choose a hotel package if required and book this directly with the hotel giving the reference number for colour coded package you have chosen, when you book they will need a credit/debit card number but funds will only be removed from your card once you check out of the hotel, if you fail to show and do not cancel you will be charged a £50.00 cancellation fee.
To book your tickets you need to send a cheque made out to the RLIRA and once again send them to the address at the end of this letter, the costs are
£25.95 for the member
£10.00 for the partner
If you wish only to come on the Sunday you will still be required to purchase tickets and if you wish to stay for lunch you need to add another £15.00 per head.
Entrance to the estate will be by coach only and you will need to board them at the hotel by 09.15am latest, however we will pick up at Hatfield Station which is directly opposite the entrance.
I will accept a post dated cheque for this event dated no later than 31July 2008.
You will also be required to bring a spare pair of out side shoes with you just in case it is wet as the Statue site is by the river.
This is going to be the most spectacular event since the laying up of the colours at Cranbourne Barracks do you really want to miss it? Your UK committee has been working virtually full time to put this into place.
You will get value for your money there is lots happening to keep you occupied for the week end
All those who have purchased tickets will get a full programme of events early in September.
The appeal is going very well with donations coming in from all over the world and from every association you could think of, it has been absolutely fantastic and people have just been so generous, but as you can imagine the bills are starting to flood in, however a full set off accounts will be published after the final event in September, so a big thank you to everybody and I look forward to seeing you all at Hatfield House.
30degreesouth will be having a Book stall at the Ramada Jarvis Hotel on Saturday 27th September and anyone purchasing books by Alex Binda will be able to have them signed and also if they wish you may bring books already purchased for signature.
The Australasia Branch held their annual Anzac Parade in Brisbane on 25th April,2008 which was attended by our patron, Brig. Digger Essex-Clark, and also Shaun Ryan from UK, who took the post UDI Colours with him and were paraded with dignity and pride by the Australasia members. A full report of this event will appear on the website shortly.
