What is wrong with people??:confused::confused:
It seems to me that they are not proud of their given names, or maybe they are afraid of something.
Why hide behind a stupid nickname that nobody can relate to.
I am Barry Charles Roper and am bloody proud of the name and have nothing to be ashamed of and also proud of what I have achieved in my lifetime so far and do not see the need to hide away behind a nickname.
I agree Barry. My name is Tony Nienaber. There is no need to hide behind nicknames. However we all have nicknames and as long as we don't hide behind them that is great. I believe that my nickname is "Cashimbato" and I have heard various stories related to that. Some good, some not. :)

Your nick comes from the word "cacimbado", which means in African Portuguese a person which has been affected by the cacimbo.
Cacimbo is the small drizzle that falls during night time and resembles very light rain, and can drive a person crazy.
Therefore, the Portuguese speakers from 32 Bat. were calling you a person that has gone crazy from too much cacimbo, or being too long with the cacimbo.

Thank you Fang. That has never been explained to me before. Some of my NCO's and troops told me that I was crazy but I never realized that it was caused by a light drizzle that falls at night. :o:o

So let the truth be told, I am Reuben Kenneth Coskey Known as Butch to friends and family, then came the very long black hair that i had till 2 months ago , hence the name runningbear, some good looking woman said i looked like a red injun and called me Runningbear so that is why i still use it as a handle. Now i will change it on the forum so that we know who i am.:p

Kashimba is a deturpation of the Portuguese word Cachimbo, which has nothing to do with Cacimbo. In Portuguese Pipe or Cachimnbo is a male word and in African Portuguese is female, reason why it is written with a a at the end, because the tabbacco is put in its entrails.
Cachimbo is a smoking pipe as you say and, therefore, just a similar sounding word.
When in Africa ALL old African hands ( regardless of the colour of their skins) would refer to a person which has gone crazy as being "cacimbado". Therefore it was interpreted by the black soldiers that Tony's fearlessness and good leadership was a product of being crazy.
In Rhodesian Army terminology Battalion was written in short as Batt and not Bn. Different countries have different ways, that's all.

Barry - A good, thought-provoking post. Guilty as charged, I guess. You and Stan make a good point. It just seems the thing to do on the few forums I've been on - log in a 'nickname'. Personally, I've nothing to hide. On the spur of the moment, I chose cal.308 after my FAL, instead of "Randy" that I've had for 57 years. If allowed to, I'll gladly change it. Proud to be part of this forum with you all.

I never infered that I know the history of the 32 Bn better than you. Far from it! You served with the Bn and you definetely know what went on!
But I know Portuguese better than you without a shadow of a doubt! I am a Portuguese from Africa. I grew up in the bush and have been in Africa non stop for the last almost 61 years and I can say I know my language and the mentality of the Black Africans ( Yes there are Black as well as White Africans!). They will always tell you what they think you want to hear or is it not so?
I am truly sorry to desagree with you but I do know what I am talking about and it has nothing to do with knowing the history og the 32 Bn.

Fang I agree with Tony, I have known Stan (our tame Moo Cow supporter) for several years now via the internet and he justs loves to provoke different people. Just take him with a pinch of salt like you would a nice juicy steak:D:D:D

It takes a lot more than that to make me worry, don't worry.
I did 12 years in the Rhodesian Army, from 1967 onwards , and I got to be quite thick skinned in life. It takes a hell of a lot more than that to make me get hot.:rolleyes:
